Project Management Process

The BTG Project Management Methodology template is a detailed 6 Stage, 12 page template for your Company’s Goal Oriented activities; undertakings involving interrelated activities with finite durations; with a beginning and an end and each project to a degree is unique.

Regardless of the nature of the project and the type of company undertaking the project, there are definite elements of the methodology the majority of which apply. The following methodology is, however, based on sizable project. The Project Manager would then tailor the methodology to fit the size and complexity of the project.

Although each project may not require all the deliverables identified in the methodology, all key projects require the following items as detailed on the attached methodology checklist.

• Project Description (which is periodically updated)
• Approved Business Case including cost benefit analysis (Feasibility Analysis)
• Detailed Project Plan (including budget which is periodically updated)
• Post Implementation Review

These items have been positioned at critical points in the process – points at which a project should be assessed for its worthiness to continue. It must be remembered that the termination of a project can equate with success, if proceeding would have otherwise had a negative impact on the Company’s strategic objectives. For this reason, it is suggested that project sponsors require their project managers to prepare the above items for all of their projects – not just for the ‘key’ projects (Key projects would be defined as projects that require substantial resources, are strategic in nature and/or merit considerable consideration and awareness within the organization).

The Director of Planning is available to help the Project Managers understand the methodology as well as to aid them in developing, managing and implementing their projects. The Template has a Project organization chart to illustrate this role. Also note that a detailed Project Management Reference Guide as well as other tools that are essential to the project and are essential to the discipline of successful Business Project Management.

On the subject of sound business practice, any project that is considered by Senior Management to be a significant or large project should be managed by an individual with proven Project Management experience. Again, depending on the scope of the project, it should be a full time as opposed to a part time responsibility in addition to the Project Managers regular position.
