Product Development Process

The BTG Product Development Process Template is a 5 Stage, 14 page document including process flow charts and an organizational structure diagrams for new product development. This Product Development Process (PDP) is based on the process studied at the top Business Schools across North America and adapted into the Corporate sector by both Fortune 500 Companies as well as smaller to medium sized organizations committed to the fundamentals of sound business practice management. It is essentially a blueprint for taking products from idea to launch. The diagram on the following page illustrates the structure of the process. With very minor modifications the PDP is adaptable and can include new product from an outside manufacturer or supplier.

The process consists of a series of stages, where a designated cross-functional project team works on the development of a product through stages within the process, where management reviews the completed work and makes decisions about the future of each product project. The process is designed to weed out weak product ideas early, allowing important resources to be focused on more promising products. The process has four stages of evaluation that begins in the conceptual stage. It should be noted that very few products make it through and become actual products. This PDP is seen as superior to a “linear production line”, where ideas are often pushed through the development process regardless of how attractive they are. It is estimated that only one of every ten product ideas actually becomes a commercial success, possibly fewer.

A second advantage of this type of process is that every project is evaluated in the same manner, and project teams know exactly what is required of them at all points along the way. A set of “deliverables” is identified for each stage, and the project team must provide these in order for the product to pass through to the following stage. The managers assigned to review the project, use the deliverables to evaluate the attractiveness of the project using a set list of criteria. The Marketing Manager may differ from stage to stage, and must have the authority to commit the necessary resources for the next stage.

This process is meant to be a starting point for your Company to implement and will lead to PDP modifications and improvements that will transform your PDP into an efficient and effective process for developing successful new products.

It is also imperative that the existing products and/or product lines be subject to the similar screening process on a timeline that dovetails with the annual Strategic Planning
Process. Should existing products be updated? Do they have a broader application? Do they continue too be profitable and so forth.

Through this ‘business process reengineering’ template your Company will embrace a Product Development Process that integrates both the Marketplace as well as all essential functional areas of your company.
