The BTG Business

Business Case is the tool in a
management system that serves as the
project planning, communication and
approval document.
A Business Case is a concise written
plan which projects the benefits
expected and the resources required
for a proposed project or course of
action. The objectives of the
project including the problem to be
solved and/or the company policy
being addressed should be clearly
identified. The issues involved may
be more than monetary, so the scope
of a business case should be
expanded beyond a simple economic
justification.
The fact that a proposed new project
has been included in the appropriate
operating or capital budgets does
not replace the need for a business
case. Inclusion in a budget merely
indicates the magnitude of funding
which has been allocated for an
acceptable project. A business case
represents a detailed justification
that a particular project is an
acceptable one.
Based on the contents of the
business case the decision maker
should be able to determine the
purpose of the project, its
financial and non financial impact
on the company, its level of risk
and how to evaluate its success or
failure.

be conveyed for all projects are:
• Approvals
• Executive Summary
• Situation Analysis
• Alternatives
• Cost and Benefits Summary
• Appendices
Through consistency and
completeness, business cases can
also be used to rank projects when
scarce resources are to be
allocated.
